ost consumers are not aware that even store-purchased bottled water can be contaminated. In some instances, "filtered and distilled" (the purest form - and then there are variations) can contain microbes due to its time on the shelf and/or exposure to microbes before sealing. Often times, manufacturers will add "incidental levels" of preservatives ("incidental" supposedly meaning that the amount added is insufficient to put on the ingredient label), unbeknown to the consumer. Generally speaking, purified bottle water IS better for drinking and cooking than tap water because it has the chlorine, flourine, and other municipal, chemical additives removed (if they're even there to begin with - it depends on the 'source water') and there is no question it's lower in its microbial count.
