Tinea

Fundamentals

The term "tinea" (Latin, "worm") is used to define a wide variety of fungal skin diseases occurring on various parts of the body.

Some of these are covered elsewhere in the "ailments" section of this site, including athlete's foot (tinea pedis) and jock itch (tinea cruris).

Other common forms of tinea include "tinea barbae" (affects bearded areas of the neck and face); "tinea capitis" (scalp, usually caused by Microsporum or Trichophyton tonsurans; " tinea corporis" (body, usually trunk and back - a variation is is quite itchy); "tinea imbricata" (chronic, caused by Trichophyton concentricum, present in tropical regions and composed of lesions that have scales at their edges; "tinea niger" (palms, caused by Cladosporium werneckii or C. mansonii; and tinea versicolor (caused by Malassezia furfur, usually affects anywhere from the neck down to the thighs and appears as hyperpigmented, patchy areas).

Orthodox medicine has an array of antifungals that attempt, some successfully, to eliminate some of these "tinea" fungal skin disorders. Griseofulvin is the most common from an internal point of view; some areas are treated with topical anti-fungal; and some (such as those affected by Microsporum audouinii, are particularly resistant to attempts to treat topically.
